1.2.1 Hosts

A host is a collective name for the entire system, including the hardware required for job processing, the programs that are executed, and the communication devices.

The available combinations of hosts are the active and standby systems and the primary and secondary systems.

Organization of this subsection

(1) Active system and standby system

The host that performs job processing on a server (host containing the running server) is called the active system for that server, and the host that is standing by in case of a failure (host containing the standby server) is called the standby system for that server.

The server currently performing job processing is called the active server, and the server standing by in case of a failure is called the standby server.

(2) Primary system and secondary system

To identify the two separate hosts during system configuration and environment setup, the host that first starts a server as the active system is called the primary system for that server, and the host that starts as the standby system is called the secondary system for that server. This relationship between primary and secondary systems remains unchanged, even when control is passed between the active and standby systems after system startup.
