1.3.2 Startup procedure used in the event of an error in the master directory RDAREA (pdstart -r [-t])

If an error occurs in the master directory RDAREA, HiRDB cannot be started by any of the normal startup methods. In such a case, the pdstart -r command must be used to start HiRDB.

If HiRDB has been started with the pdstart -r command, only the following utilities and commands can be executed; no other operations are possible:

The HiRDB administrator must use one of these utilities to restore the master directory RDAREA. Once the master directory RDAREA has been restored, HiRDB can be restarted and application processing can be resumed.

To activate shared resources (for example, a shared disk or IP address) simultaneously with HiRDB startup when the server mode system switchover facility based on an HA monitor is being used, execute pdstart -r -t command.

For details on the actions to be taken when HiRDB cannot be restarted due to an error in the master directory RDAREA, see 20.4.2 When HiRDB does not restart.

Actions to take if an error occurs during a startup using the pdstart -r command
Since the purpose of starting HiRDB using the pdstart -r command is to restore the database, a system error or a communications error between the unit in which the system manager is located and a unit in which the system manager is not located cannot be recognized. Consequently, if an error occurs in HiRDB after it is started using the pdstart -r command, the database recovery utility (pdrstr) or the database copy utility (pdcopy) that was being executed might not terminate in some cases.
If this happens, take action according to the following procedure:
[Figure]
Explanation
  • First, forcibly terminate HiRDB, and then restart it. In the case of a HiRDB parallel server configuration, HiRDB cannot be terminated if an error occurred in the unit in which the system manager is located. Therefore, execute the pdstart -R command. Executing this command forcibly starts the unit in which the system manager is located, and then forcibly terminates the server in a HiRDB parallel server configuration.
  • After HiRDB has been restarted, re-execute the utility. Re-executing the database recovery utility (pdrstr) alone might not be sufficient to recover the database. See 21. Database Recovery Procedures and take the necessary actions.
